Halo

That kiss was special, just as our connection was special.

They were two of my dearest people and yet for some reason they couldn’t get along. They were constantly destroying each other.

At that moment, when they entered through the door, I felt like I was having a déjà vu. My brother and Brooke looked as if they had just come from a war zone. Brooke looked terribly, exhausted, her eyes were puffy and her dress was torn and dirty. And Wade didn’t look any better. They avoided looking at each other. They ignored me too. Brooke immediately disappeared upstairs and Wade strode past me, pretending not to notice me. The scenario was similar to what I observed between them, a few days ago.

Something told me that something serious happened between them, and that something was not a happy story.

“What the hell happened, Wade?” I asked, following him into the living room.

Of course, he didn’t answer. What else did I expect? Avoiding my question, he walked to the antique cabinet and took out a bottle of bourbon. Aha!

“It’s seven in the morning, Wade!”

He growled a little, poured a glass for himself and drank it in one go. Then he blinked.

“I’m fucked,” he said hoarsely, pouring himself a refill.

Clicking my tongue, I went to him and took the glass from his hand. He was taken aback with what I did but didn’t react quick enough to stop me. I didn’t usually interfere with his drinking. I was not his mother. But his behaviour was abnormal today.

“If you don’t want me to ram my fist into your pretty face, little brother, you’ll give me back my drink.” His look was withering, yet I held the glass at arm’s length away. “When you tell me what happened.”

“Alright. Now give it to me!”

I sighed and pushed his drink towards him. “Go!”

“Where’s Rory?” he asked, deftly avoiding me.

“He’s looking out for you at the club. Damn, Wade, you’ve been acting weird and you’re hurt, Dad’s been… He’s never kicked me out of his office before. And all of a sudden you text me to come back here. But since you weren’t here, Rory took off again…never mind…I’ll call him back. But, now you tell me exactly what’s wrong?”

Wade stared at the glass in his hand. He took a sip and turned his back on me as he walked to the windows and looked out into the garden, which was slowly becoming visible as the sun rose. “Dad thinks, Brooke was in cahoots with her husband,” he blurted out.

“What, no, I don’t think so. What…what makes him think that?”

“Andrei,” he answered quietly.

“His informers? Based on what evidence?” I knew our father would not believe in baseless rumors. There had to be more to it than that. Andrei used to infiltrate some spies in other syndicates and clans, who regularly provided us with information from the enemy camps. So far we had been able to rely on them with our eyes closed, but… No, I couldn’t believe it. We would have noticed if Brooke had been lying to us all along.
